The I-League is an Indian football league for association football clubs. At the top of the Indian football league system, it is the country's primary football competition. Contested by 14 clubs, it operates on a system of promotion and relegation of two teams each year with the I-League 2nd Division. Seasons run from October to May, with teams playing 26 matches each, totalling 182 matches in the season. Most games are played on Saturdays and Sundays, with a few games played during weekday evenings. The competition formed as the ONGC I-League in 2006 following the disbanding of the National Football League.

Prayag United S.C. is an Indian football Club from Kolkata in West Bengal, India. The club currently plays in the I-League.

For the 2010-11 I-League season United SC played at the Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata. On Indian Transfer deadline day United SC made the biggest headline news by signing India national football team striker Sunil Chhetri till the end of the season. In June 2011 after the I-League season ended old sponsors Chirag choose to cut ties with United SC and thus Chirag United SC became United Sports Club. Even though the team has lost a lot in terms of sponsorship money the club is still able to sign and retain their current players. On August 3, 2011 it was announced that United Sports Club had signed a sponsorship deal with Prayag Group and on August 7, 2011 United Sports Club officially changed their name to Prayag United S.C.

Mohun Bagan Athletic Club is an Indian I-League football club based in Kolkata, West Bengal. It is one of the oldest football clubs in Asia, having been established in 1889. The football team has been successful since its establishment and has maintained its status as one of India's most successful clubs, having won multiple trophies of national significance such as the Federation Cup, Rovers Cup, Durand Cup, IFA Shield, National Football League and the Calcutta Football League. Mohun Bagan was the first Indian team to defeat a European team, when they defeated the East Yorkshire Regiment, 2-1 to lift the 1911 IFA Shield.

Mohun Bagan has a long-standing rivalry with neighbours East Bengal, with whom it contests the Kolkata derby.
